The latest Balnaves selections are all bang on, with this looking the goods as its fabulously fragrant cassis lift weaves in and out of fine oak foundations-and anyone lucky enough to have an elder tree will also see its dark blue-black berries, pulped and earthily aromatic. The wine also highlights wild bush smells, savoury mushroom and olive tapenade flavours supported by softly engaging tannins. Exciting now and for many years.

The Balnaves Coonawarra Vineyard was established in 1975, and is situated at the southern end of the Coonawarra Terra Rossa strip. The family, which has been associated with the district since 1855, remains fully committed to a high level of ‘hands-on’ involvement.

    • Winemaking

Vintage 2011 was cool and wet producing lighter structured wines in what we call the old traditional Coonawarra style. Made from a rigorous selection of small Cabernet parcels from our Dead Morris, Walker, and Quarry Vineyards (96%), with a touch of Petit Verdot (2%) from our Dunstan Vineyard. Maturation was for 17 months in new and second fill oak from Sylvain and St Martin and Taransaud, prior to bottling in November 2012 under screwcap.

    • Tasting Notes

Dark red colour, the nose shows a complex array of cassis, elderberry and blackberry, a touch of seaweed and a faint perfume of wild blackberry from Petit Verdot. Long maceration on skins has produced a complex, more elegant savoury style.
