Vintage 2025 growing season in Coonawarra was shaped by a classic El Niño weather pattern, bringing a warm, dry summer that led to an early harvest. These conditions, along with an exceptionally dry season, contributed to exceptional flavour concentration and vibrant colour in the red wines, while the Chardonnay, displayed bright fruit and delicate florals.
Early in the growing season, regular rainfall and cooler weather supported healthy early vine growth. Disease pressure remained low, which allowed vineyards to maintain strong canopies and healthy fruit development. December was notably dry, and as a result, careful irrigation management was crucial. Vines had just enough water to continue ripening fruit effectively, though not enough to push new vegetative growth. The availability and thoughtful use of precious underground water played an important role in sustaining vine health through this critical period.
Viticultural practices such as bunch thinning were carried out in premium blocks, contributing to balanced yields and higher quality fruit. The season saw a good fruit set with minimal frost impact, resulting in strong bunch architecture. Early picking was common, reflecting the season’s warmth and rapid development. Fruit quality was promising, with lovely, developed tannins observed—particularly at the lower Baumé levels.
While the wines may not carry the weight or power of a bigger vintage, they are showing full flavour and excellent structure. There’s a sense of restraint and refinement across the board, with red wines demonstrating concentration and finesse, and whites offering purity and brightness.
Overall, the 2025 vintage in Coonawarra offers great potential. The wines are elegant, balanced, and poised for graceful aging—an outcome that reflects the thoughtful vineyard management and attention to detail.
