This release shows typical aromas of black cassis, blackberry and violet fruit with more complex characters of spice, chocolate, fruit cake, leather and truffle coming from the older wines.

Tasting Note

The Balnaves Coonawarra Vineyard was established in 1975, and is situated at the southern end of the Coonawarra Terra Rossa strip. The family, which has been associated with the district since 1855, remains fully committed to a high level of ‘hands-on’ involvement.

Balnaves have used Cabernet Sauvignon grapes to make this modern Sparkling red. Blended from selected parcels of more complex and elegant wines from eleven vintages of reserve wines matured as a solera. Tiraged in October 2018 and then disgorged in March 2019.

Rich and very complex with cassis, blackberry and violet fruits, combined with mature Coonawarra Cabernet characters of chocolate, leather and truffle. Ready to drink on release, this wine will gain complexity and softness with careful cellaring.

    Balnaves Sparkling Cabernet is not produced every year and the dates are in fact, the release date of this non–vintage product. Because we want this wine to be drinkable on release we use a solera system which has a blend of reserve wines in it dating from 1995 when we started this technique. We add fresh wine into the Solera when we have made wines of the right style. The wine is thus matured before tirage (sparkling process). We ferment in bottles then transfer to fresh bottles for packaging. Because the maturation happened before tirage this wine can be drunk on release but as you will see below, it can still age and become more complex with further cellaring.

    Deep red purple tinge, complex red and black fruit, perfumed and complex wild blackberry creamy aromas, good bubble up front in the mouth. Strong red cranberry fruit and good flavour length, rich and complex. Portuguese varietal vintage port in dosage adding extra complexity to this wine.

    Light-mid red brick tinge, lifted perfumed nose, cassis, talc powder, sweet blackberry fruit, spicy leather, tight and balanced. Very fine elegant style, leaner but ripe fruit. Aging well.

  • 2007

    Mid red brick tinge, Delicate nose, smooth and balanced with antique furniture notes. Toffee and earthy notes with a creamy feel. Palate is fine and balanced, with spice, savoury notes and black fruits, good length and soft tannin finish. Slightly more advanced than last two vintages.

    Mid red brick tinge, nose truffles and mushroom notes, spice and dark fruit good length. Notes of mint spicy leather complexity. Not a big wine but leaner lower dosage, with nice balance and firmer tannins.

    Mid-dark red brick tinge, dark cassis fruit, blackberry rich and dense aromas, good bubble, cedar and cigar box, strong and balanced. Rich palate, strong dark fruit line with good length, complex with spicy finish. Aging very well.

    Mid–dark red brick tinge, good bubble. Nice complex mushroom truffle notes, dark cassis, fruit forest floor complexity. Soft fruit, good line and length, solid black fruit backbone with cedar truffle flavours and spice on the finish.

    Mid–dark red brick tinge, Nose leaner in style, mint cassis fruit with leather note. Palate is complex and subtle, good balance, soft fruit, lighter on the tongue. Gentle fruit, leaner style.

    Mid – dark red brick tinge, Complex nose forest floor, mushroom, spice cedar coffee and black fruit. Still tight and balanced. Soft full palate good bubble , black currant, spice and leather on the finish, touch of toffee. Very good shape.

    Pale brick red with a brick tinge. Bubbles still good, delicate aromas of red fruit slight mint and leafy Cabernet notes, showing its age with earthy leather characters, palate lean with slightly greener fruit, tobacco and cedar maturity.
