Medium bodied with fleshy dark liquorice/berry fruit, spicy notes and a soft grainy tannin finish.

Tasting Note

The Balnaves Coonawarra Vineyard was established in 1975, and is situated at the southern end of the Coonawarra Terra strip. The family has been associated with the district since 1855 and Doug, Annette, Kirsty and Pete Balnaves remain fully committed to a high level of β€˜hands-on’ involvement.

Vintage 2015 produced excellent Shiraz. Sourced from our 41-year-old Paulownia Shiraz vineyard. Low yielding vines were picked at 13.8baume, berry-sorted and then open top fermented for 10 days. Matured for 15 months in new (52%) and second fill (48%) French oak prior to bottling in October 2016.

Deep red in colour, the nose shows intense perfumed dark wild blackberry fruit, interwoven with spice and toasty vanillin notes. The palate is medium bodied with fleshy dark liquorice/berry fruit, spicy notes and a soft grainy tannin finish. This wine will reward from careful cellaring and we recommend decanting before drinking.

Reviews

From the 41yo Paulownia Vineyard, matured for 18 months in French oak (35% new) immaculately made from quality estate grapes. The mix of plum, dark cherry and blackberry is only medium-bodied, but it has swallowed the oak with the ease that you will have in swallowing this wine. One of the style lighthouses in Coonawarra. To 2035.
