Medium bodied with fleshy dark liquorice/berry fruit, spicy notes and a soft grainy tannin finish.

Tasting Note

The Balnaves Coonawarra Vineyard was established in 1975, and is situated at the southern end of the Coonawarra Terra strip. The family has been associated with the district since 1855 and Doug, Annette, Kirsty and Pete Balnaves remain fully committed to a high level of ‘hands-on’ involvement.

Vintage 2014 produced excellent Shiraz. Sourced from our 40 year old Paulownia Shiraz vineyard that ripened in early April, considerably later than in recent years. Matured for 18 months in new (35%) and second fill French oak, supplied from Bossuet, Dargaud + Jaaegle and Sylvain cooperages. This wine was bottled in December 2015.

Deep red in colour, the nose shows intense perfumed dark wild blackberry fruit, interwoven with spice and toasty vanillin notes. The palate is medium bodied with fleshy dark liquorice/berry fruit, spicy notes and a soft grainy tannin finish. This wine will improve with further careful cellaring and we recommend decanting before drinking.

Reviews

“From the 40yo Paulownia Vineyard, matured for 18 months in French oak (35% new). In the carefully considered and crafted Balnaves style, the aim to take full advantage of the quality of the fruit, allow it free expression, but not over-extract it. This is a full-bodied Shiraz with black fruits in control, but allowing the tannins and oak to both exert some influence. To 2044 “
