This wine is complex and tightly structured, made to cellar with confidence.

Tasting Note

Among his many pursuits, Doug Balnaves was a shearer of Merino sheep. A shearer in Australia is paid by the number of sheep he shears. Counted every two hour period, the Tally is recorded in the Tally book. The higher the Tally, the greater the recognition among his peers for skill and hard work. As an expression of this tradition, the Balnaves family see the wine “The Tally” as the ultimate achievement for their company.

Vintage 2013 produced good crops and ripened late in April producing deeply flavoured fruit with fine tannins. Sourced entirely from our Dead Morris vineyard, all fruit was handpicked and 40% of the blend received a long maceration on skins. Maturation was for 20 months in 79% new fine-grained chateau barriques from Taransaud and Sylvain cooperages, before light egg fining and bottling in December 2014 under procork.

Deep rich red in colour, the nose is perfumed with perfectly ripened dark blackberry, liquorice and cassis fruit. The palate is medium bodied and fine, with fleshy cassis and blackberry fruit. The finish is long and textured with fine grainy tannins. This wine is complex and tightly structured, made to cellar with confidence and decant before drinking.

Reviews

“Deeply coloured, it is the quintessence of Coonawarra Cabernet, with an immensely long palate, fruit, oak and tannins all contributing. Sometimes the oak on The Tally can seem too obvious in blind tastings with other top-flight Cabernets, but it’s hard to see that happening here. The drink-to date has been shortened by the decision to use ProCork.”Drink to 2043

Vintage 2012 was mild and early, with even ripening and no climatic extremes. Sourced entirely from our Dead Morris vineyard, all fruit was handpicked and 100% of the blend received a long maceration on skins. Maturation was for 20 months in 50% new fine-grained chateau barriques from Sylvain, Taransaud and Seguin Moreau cooperages, before light egg fining and bottling in December 2013 under procork.

Deep rich red in colour, the nose is perfumed with perfectly ripened dark blackberry, liquorice and cassis fruit. The palate is firm and full bodied, with fleshy cassis and blackberry fruit. The finish is long and textured with fine grainy grape tannins. This wine showing the structure and completeness typical of “The Tally”. Made to cellar with confidence, decant before drinking.

  • 2010

Vintage 2010 was cool with even ripening, and vintage on normal timing in late April. Sourced from our Dead Morris and Walker vineyards, all fruit was handpicked and 100% of the blend received a long maceration on skins. Maturation was for 19 months in new fine-grained chateau barriques from Seguin Moreau, Taransaud and Sylvain cooperages before light egg fining and bottling in December 2011, under Procork.

Deep rich red in colour, the nose is perfumed with perfectly ripened dark blackberry, liquorice and cassis fruit. The palate is firm, structured and tightly wound with coffee and milk chocolate characters adding to the dark fruit. The finish is long and textured with fine grainy grape tannins. An excellent Tally from an outstanding Coonawarra vintage.

  • 2009

Vintage 2009 was hot pre-veraison in January, but then mild into autumn. Sourced entirely from our Dead Morris Vineyard, all fruit handpicked for the first time and 100% of the blend received a long maceration on skins. Maturation was for 16 months in new fine-grained Chateau barriques from Taransaud and Seguin Moreau cooperages, before light egg fining and bottling in December 2010.

This is definitely the most delicate and perfumed Tally produced so far with only 300 cases made, in order to show off our best Cabernet Vineyard – Dead Morris – the character of “terrior”

Deep rich red in colour, the nose is perfumed with perfectly ripened dark blackberry, elderberry and cassis fruit. The palate is particularly fine and elegant with coffee and milk chocolate characters adding to the dark fruit. The finish is long and textured with fine grainy grape tannins. More delicate and refined than previous Tally’s.

Decant before drinking, Pete Bissell December 2010.

No need to adjust your screens… These glow-in-the-dark shrooms are the real deal, as @andrew__burston know all too well! The 2018 #GhostMushroom season officially kicked off this week at #GhostMushroomLane in Glencoe, just 16km from #MountGambier! These spooky little night lights typically emerge after late autumn rains, emitting a luminescent glow after dark – the result of a chemical reaction between fungal enzymes and oxygen. There’s no shortage of them either – this is the largest site of its type in #Australia, with tens of thousands of freaky funghi appearing from May-June. Take the 2.3km free self-drive forest trail and you’ll find Mother Nature’s army of green lanterns growing from old tree stumps, the decaying remnants of the annual pine harvest. ForestrySA are also offering guided tours on Fri/Sat/Sun nights, giving those keen to learn more about these eerie emblems of the darkness a chance to get up close and personal. A small display will also be on hand at the @tourism_mount_gambier Visitor Centre from next week, operating Tue/Wed/Thu throughout May. For the full lowdown on everything that glows! #SeeSouthAustralia 👽🍄 [📍Location: a 40 minute flight (or 5hr drive) from Melbourne, or a 1hr flight (4.5hr drive) to Mount Gambier from
